As Villarreal and FC Barcelona prepare to close out the year with a top-of-the-table clash, Blaugrana manager Hansi Flick addressed the media, sharing his initial assessment of the upcoming fixture.

Flick opened by stressing the importance of every fixture: "Every game is the most important, every game is tough. However, we're up against a formidable team with a distinct philosophy – direct, playing with excellent style. I commend their coach and the entire squad. They've improved significantly and are performing very well," he stated.

The German tactician also confirmed that midfield maestro Pedri would be sidelined for the match: "No, he won't be available. I'm not happy about it, but it is what it is. He's currently injured, but we anticipate him being ready for our next fixture against Espanyol. He's experiencing calf issues. While he could potentially play, the risk is too high, so it's best he rests," Flick elaborated.

"It's nothing serious, but we need to manage it carefully and ensure he receives appropriate treatment. That's the current situation; he simply cannot play. We refuse to take any risks, especially with a hamstring concern. With crucial matches against Espanyol and the Supercopa on the horizon, we absolutely need him fit in January. Furthermore, we possess ample quality within the current squad to cover his absence," he affirmed.

Addressing the decision not to stage the match on US soil, Flick remained pragmatic: "It is what it is. Ultimately, I'm happy to play the game in Villarreal, and I accept the decision made."

However, there was positive news regarding star striker Robert Lewandowski, with Flick confirming his availability for the upcoming clash: "He's ready to play; he's an option for tomorrow's match. We opted not to take any risks with him in the Copa del Rey or our previous LaLiga fixture. He's fully available and can feature. That's certainly good news," Flick enthused.

When questioned about his contract renewal, Flick reflected: "A year and a half as a coach is a considerable period. I am absolutely delighted to be at this club, collaborating with Deco, the staff, and the team – indeed, the entire staff is fantastic. Deco's work has been incredible. And with the president, that's precisely why I am here. It's crucial to have confidence, and we certainly feel that. We'll see what transpires after the elections. It's been wonderful to be here for a year and a half, but ultimately, the president's decision will influence my future. I am keen to continue my work here. We must take responsibility for our playing style and for securing titles. I truly hope to guarantee success next year."

Turning his attention to Frenkie de Jong, Flick offered his perspective: "It's beneficial to have control and stability within the squad, as we've clearly demonstrated. Eric performed admirably as a No. 6, and Frenkie understands the situation... he naturally wants to play, but he is an outstanding and crucially important footballer for us. It's always positive to have players who elevate the overall quality. We require both quality and healthy competition. Everyone is ready and willing. Our aim is to defeat Villarreal; it will undoubtedly be a difficult task, but I have immense faith in the quality of our players."

Discussing his approach to dressing room management, Flick elaborated: "We must always focus on what is paramount for the team, but equally, we are all human and possess feelings. If a player isn't featuring, I always engage in dialogue with them. I provide clear reasons why they aren't currently getting minutes. Conversely, they are welcome to approach me. My door is always open. My role is to help players improve, and effective communication is absolutely vital. However, ultimately, the team must function and perform as a cohesive unit."
