Trouble for Italian teams

Inter Milan, Juventus and Atalanta have lost in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs and will have to come from behind to reach the round of 16.

The Champions League play-offs began with a surprise. Galatasaray came back from Juventus' half-time lead to score four goals in the second half and travel to Italy with a three-goal advantage. In the second leg, Atalanta were defeated 2-0 away to Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park, where the Germans were superior in the first half.

But the bad news did not end on Tuesday for the Serie A teams. On Wednesday, Inter Milan travelled to Norway, to the Arctic Circle, to face the surprise package Bodo Glimt. The Yellows provided the big surprise of the first leg of the play-off, clearly outplaying the Lombards in a great second half that gave them a two-goal lead to defend in Milan in a week's time.

Results for Italian teams

  • Galatasaray 5-2 Juventus
  • Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Atlanta
  • Bodo Glimt 3-1 Inter Milan

No surprises in the rest

In the other matches on Tuesday, PSG overcame an initial 2-0 deficit in Monaco to come back and travel to Paris with a one-goal advantage. The reigning champions struggled in the clash between Ligue 1 teams. Meanwhile, Real Madrid also secured a one-goal advantage thanks to Vinicius's goal in a match marked by Pretianni's alleged racist insults towards the Brazilian.

On Wednesday, Newcastle sealed their place in the Champions League round of 16 with half a dozen goals against Qarabag. Anthony Gordon's four goals stood out. In the evening, Bayer Leverkusen showed their class and proved to be a better team than Olympiacos, taking a two-goal lead ahead of the return leg in Germany.

Finally, Bruges and Atlético Madrid played the most spectacular match of the first leg of the play-offs. The Colchoneros went into the break 2-0 up, but after the restart the Belgians managed to equalise twice. Everything will be decided at the Metropolitano in a tie that has become a single match.

  • Monaco 2-3 PSG
  • Benfica 0-1 Real Madrid
  • Qarabag 1-6 Newcastle
  • Olympiacos 0-2 Bayer Leverkusen
  • Bruges 3-3 Atlético Madrid
